Visiting two dear old friends in hospital:
Phil was holding his wife’s hand, talking quietly.
After a bit he closed his eyes, and we tip-toed out.
But at the door he called,
“Tell Patrick, I love him.”
Patrick, too, holding his wife’s hand,
heard Phil’s words,
and smiled serenely, intoning in his deep British voice,
“Ohhh… isn’t it wwwon-duh-fulll to be loved.”
